About the Author
Ghazi Abuhakema is Associate Professor and Director of the Asian Studies at the College of Charleston, South Carolina. He taught courses on Arabic language and culture, and Middle Eastern Studies at UT-Austin, Montclair State University, Middlebury College, Hunter College and National University. He is an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester, an ILR tester (Levantine), an ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT), and an ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) tester. He is the recipient of the College of Charleston’s Excel Teaching Award. He is the co-author of Kalima wa Nagham: A Text for Teaching Arabic.” He has published on heritage learners, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and the linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects of historical primary sources. Nasser M. Isleem is a native of Palestine and brings many years of experience teaching all levels of Arabic language and culture at NYUAD, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University. He is a certified ACTFL OPI tester and has participated in many academic conferences addressing the importance of Arabic culture integration, proverbs, cultural expressions and songs in Arabic language classes. Isleem has authored many other scholarly books and specializes in teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speaking students. His teaching interests include Arabic language, culture, and Egyptian, Levantine and Gulf dialects. He is the recipient of the Tanner University Teaching Award (UNC-Chaepl Hill) in 2012 and the Order of the Golden Fleece (UNC-Chaepl Hill) in 2011 and Student Undergraduate Teaching and Staff Awards (UNC-Chaepl Hill) in 2006. Ra’ed Qasem is an associate professor of AFL at the Defense Language Institute and serves as the director of DLI’s language training programs in Camp Lejeune, NC. In his position, he supervises instruction and training in 7 languages including Arabic as a Foreign Language. Further, he supervises the development of curricula and testing in the 7 languages. Ra’ed holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. His research interests include foreign language curriculum design, student-centered approaches, and teachers’ educational technology practices. He served as an instructor of English as a second/foreign language in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Finally, Ra’ed is a certified Levantine and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) OPI tester and Diagnostic Assessment Specialist. A great book on the Sacrament of Confession. We need it. The Lord initiated it. The Church provides it. While I have always been a Catholic who believes in the power of this sacrament, I benefited from Hahn's exposition of the power and importance of the Church's role in forgiveness. The reiteration of our Catholic belief in both venial and mortal sin is a well done, and easy for the potential convert to understand.I have always loved Hahn's books and this one is no different. Every parish library should have it. Every Catholic should be made to read it. In the words of Fr. John Zuhlsdorf: "Go to Confession!"

Preparing for the Lenten Penance service, I read my copy of "Lord Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession. Scott Hahn, a convert himself to Catholicism, and now a Professor at St. Francis University, Steubenville, Ohio, and President of St. Paul Center for Theological Studies, has done it again. He is a very inspired, and well educated professor who takes delight in digging into the roots of the Church and finding the earliest references to this most important Sacrament of the Church. Going all the way back to the Book of Genesis and coming forward through the Bible to where Jesus institutes the sacrament with his apostles to forgive sins, "Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you loose, they are loosed in Heaven." Scott Hahn teaches how the Jewish faith involved the cleansing and purification of oneself before going into the temple, and how in the Book of Leviticus laws were to be formed, and all these Old Testamentreferences come not to be replaced, but fulfilled in the sacrament of penance. An examination of conscience Appendix provides one with examination of our lives based on the Ten Commandments, and Prayers that can be said.It all made sense when in our penance service this sacrament was depicted as a large umbrella, purple for the color of Lent, underneathon one side was a word - Confession, which was the telling of our sins to another, in this case, a Priest who is given the authority through the Church, established by Christ. This act helps us voice our sins and seek council and is like emptying the soul of them. On the other side, was a word Penance. Penance is any act that is a way to reverse what was done by prayer, reading scripture, offering ourselves in asking forgiveness, and even reconciling with those whom we offended in necessary. Above the umbrella is a large word Reconciliation.This is what the sacrament is in a nutshell. We confess our sins, admitting we have sinned (and every live human being is a sinner), we come to Christ in the sacrament and are forgiven our sins, and given a penance (token prayer, or reading to pray for forgiveness and thanking God for His forgiveness), and we are reconciled with God after we reconcile ourselves with those we offended if we can do so.This book is easy to read, and I even went and marked the pages where biblical references were made to follow the flow of the development of this sacrament. It all makes sense and thanks to Scott's wonderful and easy to follow style of writing, I learned even more than I grew up with over 72 years. I highly recommend this book for any one Catholic or non-Catholic to read and see what this scholar, and theologian, has found in his personal study to help us in our prayer in time of problems, "Lord, Have Mercy." This book will practically make you want to go to confession. It has a great guide for an examination of conscience. When entering the church, I was so totally prepared for confession that my confessor was just surprised. It gives the full reasons for the complete rite of penance and will make you realize how much better you'll feel after you go to confession, and that when you don't pick and choose the teachings you listen to, you'll be truly healed.Go to confession! Confess completely! You'll feel like a million bucks.

I have read but two chapters. I am finding the material to be very germane to this Lenten season. Scott Hahn writes in a way which is thought provoking without being preachy. Scott Hahn's writing is such that there is layer after layer of well stated levels of meanings or depth of thought to each chapter. There is a coordinating series on EWTN, the Catholic TV station. Both the book and the EWTN series are well worth the effort needed to study.

Confession sets our relationship right with God, which extends to our relationship with others. A right relationship with God transforms our soul so that we can cooperate with grace to live the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Really enjoy Scott Hahns writing. I am an adult convert to catholicism so my education is lacking. I really enjoy his books because they explain the important details in ways that make it easy to understand. He also is very passionate about the relationship with Jesus and it shows in his writing.

Scott Hahn has wowed me again! I am a convert to the Church, was brought in this past Easter 2015. I started watching Lord Have Mercy on EWTN, and I just had to get the book, and I am glad I did. Scott Hahn has helped me gain a very deeper and strong love for the Sacrament of Penance!

As all of Scott's writings, a very good read and even better in hard bound edition.
